E uropean Cu lture and E conomy (European Culture and Economy), or ECUE for short, is an academic course that is interdisciplinary and is often confused with the Bachelor or Master course in European Studies . However, they differ in many ways. The graduates of the ECUE course can work in a wide variety of areas, but often in professions that are related to the EU and its institutions.

Emergence

ECUE is an international master’s course that interlinks various disciplines and places the content of the events in a European context. The course was offered for the first time in the 1999/2000 winter semester at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Originally, with the support of the DAAD and the HRK , primarily students from the humanities were supposed to acquire economic basics, intercultural competence and the necessary know-how for the job market. In 2007, “European Culture and Economy” was accredited by ACQUIN . The standard period of study is four semesters.

program

One focus of the course is the investigation of the European area from a social, cultural and economic perspective. In colloquia and a mandatory excursion to Brussels, the individual topics are linked and the research and intercultural skills of the students are trained. Through the course of study, the students do not develop into experts in the departments involved, but rather into specialized generalists.

Events from the following departments are attended:

The familiarization with many different disciplines and the active connection of the contents enables the students to easily take different perspectives and analyze them, a quick familiarization with new facts and a rational handling of cultural self-image and external image.

Since the course places great value on internationality, the students get to know the perspectives of different nations in the seminars. These come not only from EU countries, but also from Asia, Africa, the USA and other European countries. In the meantime, students from over 40 nations have graduated, as many places are given to foreign students.

requirements

In order to be able to take part in the "European Culture and Economy" course, students must have a good to very good bachelor's degree and appropriate knowledge of German and English. For German students it is an advantage if they have already gained experience abroad, either in the form of an internship or an academic stay.
