The Australian island of Quail Island (English for " Quail Island ") is located 26 miles from Port Darwin in the Beagle Gulf , a bay in the Timor Sea . Quail Island was first mentioned in the news as the SS Brisbane , an 85.8 meter passenger, cargo and mail ship built by A. & J. Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow , on a voyage from Hong Kong ran aground after Darwin on the nearby Fish Reef .

Quail Island is part of the Quail Island Group . The other two islands in the archipelago are Bare Sand Island in the southwest of Quail Island and Djadjalbit Island in the south.

The islands are known as a breeding ground for barrier reef turtles .

Military training ground

The Quail Island Air Weapons Range was used as a military training area from 1945 to 1979. As a result, some dangerous ammunition remains were scattered all over the island. A three year clean-up began in 2011 to remove dud hazards. The island was closed to visitors such as tourists and amateur anglers during the cleanup.
