Costa Coffee is an international coffee house operator based in Dunstable , United Kingdom . As of January 2011, Costa Coffee had 1,175 stores in the United Kingdom and 442 stores in 28 other countries. This makes Costa Coffee the largest coffeehouse chain in the UK and the second largest coffeehouse chain in the world (after Starbucks ).
The coffee house company is sponsor and organizer of the British Costa Book Award, which has been presented annually since 1971 in five categories, and of the British Costa Short Story Award, which has been presented since 2012 .
In August 2018, Costa Coffee was sold by its previous parent company Whitbread for 3.9 billion pounds (just under 4.4 billion euros) to the Coca-Cola Company . This year Costa Coffee is already operating around 3400 branches in more than 30 countries.
