Deal Island is an irregularly shaped island in the Bass Strait between Australia and Tasmania . It is the main island of the Kent Group ( English Kent Group ).

To the west of Deal Island, separated by the Murray Pass , which is around one kilometer narrow , are the two islands of Erith Island (north) and Dover Island (south), which are connected by a gravelly sandbank at low tide .

Deal Island had the highest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere with the Deal Island Lighthouse . The 22 meter high tower is located at 305 m above sea level in the southwest on the highest point on the island. This altitude occasionally caused problems with the visibility of the beacon in low cloud cover. The lighthouse was built in 1848 and decommissioned in 1992; warning lights were built for this in the southwest and northeast of the island. Seal hunters and ranchers were temporarily resident on the island.

The island is part of the Kent Group National Park . The island has a boat dock, a few houses and a museum in the former lighthouse keeper's house. Some volunteers live on the island all year round to look after the island's animals and nature. The waters around the island are also protected areas. Since the island can only be reached by boat, the national park is visited by less than 1000 people per year.

The most common animals on Deal Island include sea birds , Bennett's wallabies, and kusus . The waters around the island are extremely rich in fish.
