The Sir Joseph Banks Islands (also known as Sir Joseph Banks Group ) are an uninhabited group of islands in the Australian state of South Australia . The group is in the Spencer Gulf ( Spencer Gulf ) located 35 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Port Lincoln .

The archipelago consists of 21 islands or rocks and extends from north to south over about 40 kilometers as the crow flies , from west to east over about 30 kilometers. The islands, with the exception of the main island Spilsby Island in the southeast and the twin island Reevesby Island in the north, are flat, rocky and almost without vegetation.

history

The archipelago was named after the Englishman Sir Joseph Banks on a journey of discovery by Matthew Flinders in 1802 .
