Owen Island is a small island in the Spencer Gulf off the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula in southern Australia in the state of South Australia . The island is located 460 m north of the larger Taylor Island , which is why it is also known as Little Taylor Island . According to reports from 1996, the uninhabited island is easily accessible by boat.
geography
The island rises 12 meters above sea level. The location in the Spencer Gulf, protected by the Australian mainland and other islands, as well as the nearby Taylor Island protect the island from the influences of the sea. It is dominated by sand and is rich in flora beyond the reach of high tide and surf. Owen Island is connected to Taylor Island by a sand bar below the surface of the water.
flora
The coastal sand is overgrown with the native Australian plant Atriplex cinerea , as well as the invasive plants beach mustard and beach milkweed . The center of the island is a higher scrubland with nitraria billardieri and "saltbush" . Other less common plant species on the island include Karkalla , Malva preissiana , Dianella admixta , Muehlenbeckia hastulata , Myoporum insulare , Senecio pinnatifolius and Tetragonia implexicoma .
fauna
Studies have confirmed five bird species on Owen Island. These include cliff parakeets , frigate petrels and a pair of black- billed gulls with a large young bird. In addition, in Australia was endemic skinks -Art Pseudemoia entrecasteauxii found.
Protection status
Owen Island was first recognized as a wildlife sanctuary in 1967. Since 1972 the island has been part of Lincoln National Park .
