Masson Island is an icy, 28 km (according to Australian data 33 km) long and up to 465 m high island off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . It is located 14 km northwest of Henderson Island in the middle of the Shackleton Ice Shelf .
Participants of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) led by the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered them in February 1912. Mawson named them after the Australian chemist David Orme Masson (1858-1937) from the University of Melbourne , member of the advisory committee of the research trip .
