Australian Antarctic Territory

The flag of Australia doubles as the flag of the Australian Antarctic Territory

The Australian Antarctic Territory ( English Australian Antarctic Territory ) is an area from 45 ° E to 136 ° E and 142 ° E to 160 ° E in the Antarctic , on which the state of Australia since June 13, 1933 under the Australian Antarctic Territory Acceptance Act 1933 makes a claim.

The narrow piece between 136 ° E and 142 ° E is claimed as Adélieland by France and divides the territory. With the entry into force of the Antarctic Treaty on June 23, 1961, the internationally never recognized claims were postponed for the time being.

It was not until February 13, 1954 that Australia was permanently represented in the Antarctic with the Mawson station , since then the area has been administered by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).

The territory has the postcode 7151, and postage stamps have been issued at irregular intervals since 1957 , which are also valid on mainland Australia.
