The organization, founded in 1948 and based in Kingston (Tasmania), is responsible for the administration of the Australian Antarctic Territory as well as other areas and marine protected areas in the Sub-Antarctic and is not directly subordinate to the governments of Tasmania or Australia .

Headquarters and research stations

The AAD is based in Kingston , south of Hobart . The agency has a scientific laboratory, an aquarium and herbarium , a research station for krill , workshops, equipment and tools in its building to carry out its tasks in the Antarctic.

The AAD operates three research stations in Antarctica and one on Macquarie Island , all of which are manned all year round. These are Casey Station with a seasonal camp on the Wilkins Runway , Davis Station , Mawson Station, and Macquarie Station .
