Macquarie Station (1996)

The Australian Macquarie Station , built in 1948, is located on the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island at 54 ° 30 'S, 158 ° 57' E. It serves the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) as a research base for the Antarctic 1,300 km away . 20 (in winter) to 40 researchers (in summer) are spread across 56 buildings. The focus is on marine biology and botany .

On September 13, 2016, the AAD announced the closure of the Macquarie station at the beginning of the winter season in March 2017. Reason are u. a. the aging infrastructure and the unprotected location of the buildings at sea level. In the future, the activities will be limited to the field huts and the summer months. The existing station buildings and systems are to be removed in the next few years. On October 14, 2016, the Australian Minister for the Environment and Energy announced that the construction of a new station was planned, which should be operational all year round in the 2020/21 season.
