The Geoscience Australia (German: Geoscientific Research Institute Australia ) is an authority of the Commonwealth , the Australian federal government, which carries out geoscientific studies. It is a division of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism based in Canberra .

history

The agency began operating as the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR) in 1946 to assist in geological and geophysical maps of Australia and mineral discovery.

In 1992 the name was changed to Australian Geological Survey Organization (AGSO) .

In 2001 the organization was renamed AGSO-Geoscience Australia to take into account the change in its tasks in the search for oil / natural gas and minerals . Later, in the same year as the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG) became part of the agency, the name changed to Geoscience Australia .

Organizational structure and building

This authority is led by a Chief Executive Officer and divided into the following departments:

  • Chief Scientist
  • Onshore Energy & Minerals Division
  • Petroleum & Marine Division
  • Geospatial & Earth Monitoring Division
  • Corporate branch
  • Information Services Branch

There are two buildings. The main building contains administrative offices, laboratories for geochronology , geochemistry , organic and inorganic geochemistry, paleontology and sedimentology , a foyer and a reception with a collection of important minerals , rocks , fossils and historical equipment (open 9 am-5pm Monday through Friday, except on Public holidays), a publicly accessible display room of Australian marine mineral exploration, a library, a sales and training center and the Rocco Café .

Tasks and range of services

According to its own information, the association sees itself as the world's leading institute that creates first-class geoscientific information and provides knowledge that enables the government and the Australian community to make decisions about mineral deposits , optimal environmental management and the control of critical natural areas for the benefit of all Australians .

The agency develops activities on land, in the sea and geo-coordinates . On Australian land, the activities of Geoscience Australia lie in the exploration of deposits and the planning of environmentally friendly land use, in the sea they lie in the exploration of oil and natural gas deposits and in the development of a management of natural resource extraction and in the creation of coordinates for the preparation of political Decisions taking into account risk avoidance in land and sea use.

The agency creates geoscientific products such as topographic maps and satellite images on a user-paid basis .

The agency also offers a geographic location search and earthquake monitoring for the region of Australia on the Internet free of charge.
