Station Dome Concordia (2005)

The Dome Concordia station ( Dome C for short ) is a scientific research station operated by Italy and France since 2005 , located on the Dome Charlie ice dome in the polar plateau and in Wilkesland of East Antarctica . It is 3233 m above sea level and is about 950 km from the nearest coast ( Banzare coast ). The station is at 123 ° east longitude and 75 ° 06 'south latitude.

In 2004, in the EPICA project, 900,000-year-old ice was uncovered near the EPICA Dome C borehole, which began in 1995 . This was the deepest look into the past of the earth's atmosphere to date . Until then, the oldest ice drilled was 350,000 year old ice from the Dome F drilling site and 420,000 year old ice from the drilling above Lake Vostok at the Vostok station .

The EPICA research program is a joint project of the European Commission and the European Science Foundation . The second drill site of the EPICA program is the Kohnen Station in Queen Maud Land .

Dome C was also considered as the location for the planned Overwhelmingly Large Telescope , but planning has been suspended since 2005. The high plateau offers the world's best conditions for astronomical observations (thin atmosphere, clean and dry air, little wind, no light pollution), which can only be done from more remote places in the Antarctic, such as Ridge A , Dome A , Dome F or the South Pole be exceeded.

The French research ship L'Astrolabe , among others, is used to supply the station .
