The L'Astrolabe is a supply and patrol ship for the administration of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories . The ship, built as an icebreaker , belongs to the administration of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories and is operated by the French Navy .

history

The ship was designed by the French naval architecture firm Marine Assistance and the Finnish company Aker Arctic . It was ordered by the Ministère des Outre-mer in June 2015. It was built under the construction number C325 by Chantiers Piriou in Concarneau .

The hull was supplied by the Crist shipyard in Gdynia, Poland . The construction dock was flooded on December 22nd, 2016 and the hull was towed to Chantiers Piriou a few days later for equipment and completion.

The ship was completed on July 12, 2017. It was also christened on this day . After a one-month ferry trip from France to Réunion , the completed ship was handed over after its arrival in Le Port on September 12, 2017 .

The ship replaced the predecessor ship of the same name , which had been used since 1984 to supply the Antarctic stations Dumont-d'Urville-Station in Adélieland and Station Dome Concordia , and the patrol boat Albatros, which was decommissioned in 2015 . The construction costs of the ship amounted to around 50 million euros.

commitment

The ship is used by the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile-Victor and the French Navy. It is available to the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile-Victor 120 days a year during the summer in the southern hemisphere to supply the research stations Dumont-d'Urville and Dome Concordia in the Antarctic and Port-aux-Français on the Kerguelen Archipelago . It is also used for research purposes during the supply trips. The rest of the time it is used by the French Navy for patrol trips in the exclusive economic zones of the French overseas territories Kerguelen, Crozet Islands and Saint Paul and Amsterdam in the Indian Ocean .

The ship set off for the first voyage to Antarctica on October 12, 2017. The French Navy put the ship into service on June 25, 2018 after the first Antarctic season for their patrol trips.

Technical data and equipment

The ship will have two drive trains with four four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer Wärtsilä : each with 1600 (type 8L20)  kW power driven. Two motors each act on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 500 kW. The engines are equipped with an exhaust gas treatment system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The ship thus fulfills the IMO Tier III emissions standard .

Two generators with 500 kW power (625  kVA apparent power ) and a diesel generator with 500 kW power (625 kVA apparent power) are available for power generation. In addition, an emergency generator with an output of 148 kW (185 kVA apparent power) was installed.

The deck superstructures are in the front half of the ship. There is a closed lookout above the deckhouse . Behind the superstructures there is an open working deck, which also serves as a helicopter landing deck in the rear area . The ship can carry two helicopters in hangers. Two 20-foot containers can be loaded on the aft deck . Below the aft deck is a loading deck that can accommodate 14 20-foot containers or other cargo.

In the area of the aft deck there is a crane that can lift 35 t with a reach of 12 m. Another crane is in front of the deckhouse. It can lift 900 kg with an extension of 8.8 m. In the stern area there is a stern boom below the helicopter landing deck, which can lift 5 t.

The ship is armed with four machine guns for use as a patrol ship in the French overseas territories in the Indian Ocean.

The ship is operated by 21 crew members . There is also space for 39 more people on board. It can stay at sea for around 35 days. The icebreaker can break ice up to 80 cm thick at a speed of two knots .
