Port-aux-Français with a view of the Golfe du Morbihan

Port-aux-Français (abbreviation PAF ) is an inhabited all year round research station on to France belonging Kerguelen in the sub-Antarctic . The station, which was set up as a permanent base in 1949, usually hibernates around 60 people, while the population can rise to 120 in summer. The station is also the main town of the Kerguelen.

The course on the Gulf of Morbihan was chosen because of its sheltered location and the terrain suitable for a runway (which was never built). The station has a relatively shallow harbor with a loading dock for small barges that connect to the actual supply ship.

The station is usually supplied by Marion Dufresne II , which belongs to the territorial administration of the TAAF ( Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises ). In addition to the facilities necessary for their care and a small hospital ward, the station includes scientific laboratories for biology and geophysics as well as technical facilities for meteorology , telecommunications and the control of satellites . In total, the station consists of around 50 buildings.

The climate at the station is characterized by cool summers and relatively mild winters, all year round with frequent and abundant rainfall. The wind is usually stormy with speeds of up to 150 km / h and peaks of over 200 km / h.
