The Dome Charlie (also known as Dome C ) is a 3200 m high ice dome in the otherwise structureless polar plateau of the East Antarctic Wilkesland .
The site was the scene of ice core drilling by various nations in the 1970s . As part of the supply flights undertaken by units of the United States Navy for the teams involved, a total of three Lockheed C-130 Hercules crashed here in January and November 1975 while attempting to take off. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the ice dome after the identifier for the letter C borrowed from the ICAO alphabet .
The Concordia scientific research station , operated by Italy and France and opened in 2005, is located on Dome Charlie .
