Layoak Island , also known as Layoak Islet , is a small, densely forested coral island in the northeast of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago . The uninhabited island is 600 meters long and 200 meters wide and is located in the northwest of a reef platform . It has a land area of nine hectares . The highest point is two meters above sea level.
The island is located nine kilometers west of Aukane Island and ten kilometers north of Roberts Island , the westernmost of the Bourke Islands , which administratively belong to the Central Islands , an island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of the Australian state of Queensland .
Layoak, like most of the rest of the Bourke Islands (except for the southwestern Aureed Island and Roberts Island ) traditionally belongs to the residents of Yorke Island, 13 kilometers northwest . In their language, Kalaw Lagaw Ya , Layoak Island is called Yau .
