description

The green, single, rarely group-forming, plant body is spherical to egg-shaped and reaches heights of 3.5 to 6.2 cm with a diameter of 2.5 to 5 cm. The unbranched root is beet-shaped. On the cylindrical-oval warts there are elliptical, shaggy, white or yellowish areoles from which 1 to 2 central spines very rarely arise. The 6 to 18 irregularly arranged, needle-shaped radial spines are white to yellowish and 5 mm long.

The bell-shaped flowers , which appear irregularly around the apex, are 1.5 to 2 cm long. The bracts are yellow to white. The flowering period is in March. The wide, sinuous fruits are one centimeter long and one centimeter in diameter. They contain 3 to 8 dull, dark brown to black seeds that mature within 4 weeks.

The plants withdraw into the ground during the resting phases ( geophyte ).
