Echinocactus polycephalus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Foreign language trivial names are "Biznaga de Chilitos", "Cotton Top Cactus", "Harem Cactus", "Many-Headed Barrel Cactus" and "Woolly-Headed Cactus".

Echinocactus polycephalus usually sprouts and forms clumps with spherical to cylindrical shoots that reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. There are 13 to 21 ribs . The 4 reddish to slightly purple-colored, irregularly spread central spines turn gray with age. The lowest of them is bent a little downwards, the others are more or less straight and strongly transversely banded. The central spines are 6 to 7.5 inches long. The 6 to 8 irregularly spread radial spines resemble the central spines and are 3 to 4.5 centimeters long.
The yellow flowers have a pink central stripe. They reach lengths of 5 centimeters and the same diameter. The fruits, which are dry when ripe, are covered with white hairs and are 1.2 to 2 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The distribution area of Echinocactus polycephalus extends from the southern United States to northern Mexico . The first description was published in 1856 by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow . The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Echinocactus polycephalus subsp. polycephalus
- Echinocactus polycephalus subsp. xeranthemoides (JMCoult.) NPTaylor
A synonym of Echinocactus polycephalus subsp. polycephalus is Echinocactus polycephalus var. flavispina F. Haage ex Quehl (1899).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
