Opuntia basilaris is a species of plant in the genus of Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet basilaris means 'coming from the bottom, here: branched from the base'.

description

Opuntia basilaris grows shrubby and forms dense, low cushions with a stature height of up to 50 centimeters and a width of up to 2 meters. The inverted egg-shaped to round to oblong to wedge-shaped shoot sections are blue-green and often have a purple hue. They are velvety and are 5 to 20 centimeters long, 4 to 10 centimeters wide and up to 1.5 centimeters thick. The areoles , which are usually round , have brown glochids that are up to 3 millimeters long. Thorns are usually absent.

The cherry-red to yellow, rarely white, flowers reach a length and a diameter of 5 to 7.5 centimeters. The green fruits , dry when ripe, are thornless. They have a length of 2.5 to 3 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 88.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia basilaris is distributed in the US states of California , Nevada , Arizona and Utah as well as in the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora at altitudes of 100 to 1800 meters. The first description was in 1856 by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow .

  • Opuntia basilaris var. Brachyclada (Griffiths) Munz
  • Opuntia basilaris var. Longiareolata (Clover & Jotter) LDBenson
  • Opuntia basilar var. Treleasei (JMCoult.) JMCoult. ex Toumey

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.

The Shoshone produce a poultice from the inside of the shoots of Opuntia basilaris and use it for cuts and wounds against pain.
