history

Neuwaldegg was founded relatively late. After the end of the first Turkish siege of Vienna , the Imperial Councilor Stefan Agler acquired a court and teuching place with adjoining barren garden in an area that had previously been called Ober- Dornbach , Ober-Aigen or Oberes Gut. In 1530 he was allowed to colonize the garden. Agler himself gave his property the name Neuwaldegger Hof , which Ferdinand I raised to the status of a nobleman in 1537 . Agler himself was made a knight and was given the title of Edler zu Paumgarten and Neuwaldegg in 1539 . As a result, Agler also had jurisdiction within his castle peace . The Aglers estate was expanded more and more. The later Neuwaldegg Castle was built by Count Theodor von Strattmann 1692–1706, but not on the site of the former court, but on its current site. In 1765, the property was acquired by Field Marshal Count Franz Moritz von Lacy , a friend of Joseph II . He enlarged the property and had an English landscape garden laid out, at the highest point of which he had 17 reed huts built. The splendidly furnished huts, in which all sorts of merrymaking took place, were connected with covered corridors and subsequently called Hameau (little village). Furthermore, the count had a mausoleum built for himself in the park in 1794 , in which he was buried in 1801. His property passed to the Schwarzenberg family , who gradually had the art treasures from Neuwaldegg transferred to their estates in Český Krumlov . This gave the former Neuwaldegger Park the name Schwarzenbergpark .

After the suburbs of Vienna were incorporated in 1850, the discussion about the incorporation of the suburbs began in the 1870s. However, almost all of the suburbs were against the proposal. However, at the request of Emperor Franz Joseph in a speech in 1888, the Lower Austrian provincial committee decided to unite Vienna with the suburbs. A corresponding law came into force on January 1, 1892 and united Neuwaldegg, Dornbach and Hernals to form the 17th Viennese district of Hernals. At that time Neuwaldegg was a small, sleepy village with only 355 inhabitants.

The park and castle in Neuwaldegg fell into disrepair over the years. In 1951 the Archdiocese of Vienna finally acquired the palace and had it completely renovated; since 1975 it has served as an educational center. The park was again acquired by the City of Vienna in 1958 and is now open to the public.

Attractions

Of particular importance in Neuwaldegg are Neuwaldegg Castle and Schwarzenbergpark , Austria's first landscape garden. The former Artaria Villa (now a student residence) is important on Neuwaldegger Straße .
