history

Former Dutch village on Hameau

The Austrian general Franz Moritz von Lacy acquired the Neuwaldegg estate in 1765 and had an English garden laid out there until 1796 , today's Schwarzenbergpark . At Hameau, the highest point in the park, 17 outwardly simple huts were built to accommodate Count Lacy's guests. The area was called "Holländerdörfl" because, following the Dutch model, a tree was planted in front of each of the huts. The only cabin that was not one story but one story was Lacy's personal cabin. When the count made the park accessible to the population, the hameau was the only area that was excluded from it. After Lacy's death, the Holländerdörfl fell into disrepair and was demolished. During the Second World War , an anti-aircraft gun was stationed on the hill .

After the Second World War , there was a forest inn on the hill until the 1960s. This consisted of several buildings. Hameau is the French term for the German hamlet , a collection of a few houses. The Viennese hiked up here by the hundreds on the weekends. In winter they went skiing on the forest meadows and then came back. The bus line that went to Hameau Street, 39A at that time, was doubled on days of hiking weather and provided with bus trailers. With increasing automization, the Viennese continued to drive to Lower Austria and the inn was no longer profitable. Except for the refuge, all buildings were torn down. The main building was made of stone and the top of wood, the outbuildings of wood and partly of reed. The shelter was cordoned off for years and provided with rescue equipment for skiers who had had an accident. After several break-ins and fires, it was decided to remove all doors and windows. Today the building serves as a rain shelter.

The Vienna Woods Heroes Monument was erected near the Hameau during the First World War in the municipality of Weidlingbach .
