The Baku Airport Heydar Aliyev ( IATA code GYD , ICAO code UBBB , Azerbaijani Heydar Aliyev adına beynəlxalq hava limanı ) is a major international traffic airport in Azerbaijan 15 kilometers east of the capital Baku area.
The airport is the hub for the state-owned Azerbaijan Airlines . The buildings were extensively renovated in 1998 and 1999 with an investment of US $ 19 million.
The airport has two runways and two terminals.
It was renamed in 2004 after the former President of Azerbaijan, Heydər Əliyev .
Incidents
- On November 30, 1995, a Boeing 707-300C of Azerbaijan Airlines ( aircraft registration 4K-401 ) crashed 9 kilometers from Baku Airport due to a lack of fuel, whereby two of the six passengers on the cargo flight died (see also the accident involving a Boeing 707 of Azerbaijan Airlines near Baku ) .
- On December 25, 2005, an Antonov An-140 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines 4K-AZ48 crashed after the failure of all three artificial horizons shortly after taking off from Baku Airport near Nardaran on the Caspian Sea . All 23 inmates were killed. The reason was the installation of counterfeit aircraft parts ex works (see Azerbaijan Airlines flight 217 ) .
