The Nakhchivan International Airport , on Azerbaijani Naxçıvan Hava Limanı , a commercial airport is near the city Naxçıvan in to Azerbaijan belonging exclave and autonomous republic Nakhchivan City .
The airport is used both civilly and militarily. The Azerbaijani flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines currently flies from here to the domestic destinations Baku and Ganja , AnadoluJet to the Turkish capital Ankara and Moscow Airlines and UTair to the Russian capital Moscow.
Turkisch Airlines also flies to Naxçıvan Airport from Istanbul (IST) .
Incidents
- On December 5, 1995, an Azerbaijan Airlines Tupolev Tu-134B-3 ( aircraft registration number 4K-65703 ) crashed after taking off from Nakhchivan airport. During the climb after take-off, engine no. 1 (left) failed. However, the three-person crew switched off engine no. 2 (right), which was still functioning. Then there was a loss of control; the machine hit a field about 4 kilometers from the runway. Of the 82 occupants, 52 died. The cause was a long-standing, unrepaired defect in engine 1.
