The St. Anna Children's Hospital in the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna is the oldest Austrian hospital only for children and adolescents.
history
The St. Anna Children's Hospital was founded by Ludwig Wilhelm Mauthner in 1837 in what was then the Vienna suburb of Schottenfeld as the first children's hospital in Austria-Hungary . In 1848 the hospital moved to its current location in Kinderspitalgasse 6 on Alsergrund, in a new building with 120 beds. Shortly thereafter, in 1850, the University Children's Clinic was founded in the St. Anna Children's Hospital. However, as early as 1911, the University Children's Clinic was separated from the St. Anna Children's Hospital and became part of the Vienna General Hospital .
From 1865, Josef Weinlechner was a pioneer in pediatric surgery at the St. Anna Children's Hospital and from 1902 to 1911 Theodor Escherich was Professor of Pediatrics at the University Children's Clinic in the St. Anna Children's Hospital.
In 1963 the St. Anna Children's Hospital was taken over by the Vienna Regional Association of the Austrian Red Cross .
The treatment of children with cancer began in the 1970s, and a separate isolation pavilion was built for them in 1978. When Helmut Gadner took over the medical management in 1980, the hospital was restructured and the hematological-oncology department expanded into a center for childhood cancer and stem cell transplantation. The growing medical tasks, especially in the field of hematology and oncology , made a new building and renovation of the hospital necessary.
Since the schoolchildren admitted here are often unable to attend school for a very long time, there is a branch of the Vienna Heilstättenschule here .
The next children's hospital of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy was the Anna Children's Hospital of the same name from 1843 in Graz, but which was named after Anna Plochl .
