Wiener Heilstättenschule

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heilstättenschule Wien is an institution for the school care of children who for health reasons cannot follow the lessons in their school for a longer period of time. It is part of the public school system and one of eleven branches of the special school system in Austria. The school has existed since 1948, but the idea is older.

history

On the occasion of the establishment of a separate ward for children in 1912 at the General Hospital in Vienna , university professor Doctor Clemens Freiherr von Pirquet called for school lessons to be introduced for children admitted to the hospital. This idea was realized in 1917 by the war disabled teacher Hans Radl at the suggestion of university professor Hans Spitzy in the orthopedic hospital (at that time still in Gassergasse in Margareten , today in Speisinger Straße in Hietzing ).

In 1926 this ward school was granted public rights, and in 1948 all such school classes in the Viennese hospitals were merged to form the “ special school for boys and girls in sanatoriums ”. The Heilstättenschule was anchored in the School Act in 1962. Since 1985, the Wiener Heilstättenschule has also given home tuition for oncologically ill students.

In 1994 the first psychagogue of the Vienna Heilstättenschule was assigned to service, in 2000 another followed. In the same year, home tuition for non-oncologically ill children was started.

Since 2001 there has been the “ training to become a qualified sanatorium pedagogue ”.

tasks

In cooperation with the teachers of the regular school and the doctors of the treating hospital , the sanatorium pedagogues endeavor to avoid learning deficits in the children or at least to keep them as low as possible and thus to prevent the possible loss of a school year. However, medical care and healing of the child has absolute priority.

The Vienna Heilstättenschule finds electronic support in this task at the Sankt Anna-Spital through the project “ E-learning for children with cancer ” presented in May 2001 . The children can use computers and webcams to take part in lessons in their home school and maintain contact with school friends.

In addition to imparting knowledge, it is also part of the remit of the sanatorium educators to take away or at least reduce the children's fears and above all homesickness.

In 2006, the Vienna Heilstättenschule looked after around 5,000 students in 34 classes (the term class is relative: if the spatial situation of the hospital does not permit, lessons take place in the sickroom) at 11 hospitals in Vienna. If the child is absent from his home school for a longer period of time, it will be assessed by the teacher from the Vienna Heilstättenschule. The school message at the end of the semester or the certificate at the end of the school year is issued by the home school.

Teachers

Due to the special situation in which the children find themselves, they are taught by specially trained teachers, the so-called sanatorium pedagogues.

The academy course for “ training to become a qualified sanatorium pedagogue ” is open to all teachers, provided they have already completed a full compulsory school teaching degree.

Psychagogue

Psychagogues use knowledge from pedagogy , depth psychology and psychotherapy to support children and adolescents in coping with extreme situations.

The prerequisite for training as a psychagogue is at least six years of professional experience as a compulsory school teacher.

Working group for sanatorium education

At the first meeting of sanatorium teachers in Graz in 1983 , discussions were held, among other things, on establishing a nationwide working group. This was set up in 1984 by the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture.

The tasks of this working group include, among other things, advising the ministry on questions of patient education, but also informing colleagues in the federal states about important innovations.

Nationwide training days are regularly organized for the health facility teachers.

UNESCO Charter

The “ Charter for Children in Hospitals ” adopted by the 1st European “ Children in Hospitals ” conference in Leiden ( Netherlands ) in May 1988 also grants children in hospitals the right to schooling in point 7.
