history

building

The Gothenburg Pavilion

The educational institution of the school brothers at Speisinger Straße 109, built from 1908 to 1910, was redesigned as an orphanage and asylum for the deaf and dumb in 1913 . It held this function until 1938, when the school brothers had to cease their activities. The National Socialists transferred the building to the State of Lower Austria and planned to set up a National Political Education Institute here, but it was used as a hospital during the Second World War . In 1947 the Lower Austrian state parliament decided to rebuild it with two departments ( tuberculosis and children's hospital with an attached nursing school) in view of the emergency . Crucial help came from Sweden . Europahilfe , based in Gothenburg , raised the entire facility for the children's hospital, which is why it was called Göteborghaus . The hospital opened on June 3, 1949.

The community hospital in Mödling (later district hospital), which has existed since 1882, became a municipal hospital after Mödling was incorporated into Greater Vienna during the Nazi dictatorship . After Mödling was relegated to Lower Austria, Mödling's hospital became a Lower Austrian regional hospital , to which the Speisingen Institute was attached for economic and organizational reasons. The infection department was initially housed. With the gradual expansion of the Mödling State Hospital , departments were withdrawn from Speising until the move was completed in 1969.

Orthopedic hospital

The Orthopedic Hospital was founded in 1915 by Hans Spitzy , one of the leading orthopedists of the time, as a clinic for the care and reintegration of war invalids in Gassergasse 44-46 (a building built by Ernst Lichtblau and now used as a school) in the 5th district of Vienna Margareten founded.

In 1917 the religious congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit initially took over the management of care and in 1933 the management of the entire hospital, which still sees itself as a spiritual hospital today. In 1999 the Vinzenz Group took over the management.

During the Second World War, the hospital building was so badly damaged by aerial bombs that it had to be moved. In 1945 it was relocated to the wing of the Hofburg that is now occupied by the Austrian National Library . The premises freed up by the withdrawal of the Mödling Hospital from Speising were taken over by the Orthopedic Hospital in 1956.

The Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Orthopedics was founded in 1972 by Primarius Doctor Johann Bösch as the only such department in Austria .

On September 5, 2003, an extension with six new operating theaters was opened, in which around 7,000 operations were recently performed each year.

The new building for the "Steyler Pavilion" of the Speising Orthopedic Hospital

In 2008, an 8,000 square meter extension to the "Steyler Pavilion" (formerly Pavilion 1) was opened. This houses the majority of all ward wards, a central registration and ambulance counter, as well as a day surgery center with three networked and ultra-modern surgery rooms for smaller orthopedic interventions. A large part of the costs for the new building was financed from the budget of the City of Vienna. In October 2012, another extension was opened, which mainly houses the sterilization center for surgical instruments. In this "central sterilization", the surgical instruments are washed and sterilized by all five Viennese hospitals that belong to the Vinzenz Group.

Since the 2007/2008 winter semester, the hospital has been functioning as a teaching hospital for medical students in the third stage of their studies at the Medical University of Vienna.

The Orthopedic Spital Speising also regularly organizes national and international congresses in the "Prof. Spitzy Auditorium" with a capacity of 300 people, which companies and societies can rent for their specialist events.
