St. Josef Hospital Church

The St. Josef Spitalskirche Speising is a Roman Catholic church in the Orthopedic Spital Speising in the Speising part of Vienna's 13th district Hietzing at Speisinger Straße 109.

history

A weaver manufacturer donated the orphanage on Rennweg with the orphanage church and the Empress Maria Theresia issued a letter of foundation. Under Emperor Franz Josef I , the orphanage on Rennweg was closed and a new building was relocated to Hietzing - Speising on what was then the outskirts of Vienna . Franz Josef I was present at the laying of the foundation stone of the associated church in 1910. The orphanage institution was made the responsibility of the Order of School Brothers . In the course of the annexation of Austria to Hitler's Germany , the students and teachers had to leave the institution and the use of the building became a hospital and a military hospital. Because Vienna was a Greater Vienna at the time, the hospital became part of what was then the Mödling district . After the war, the state of Lower Austria initially took over the administration of the orphanage foundation and built a hospital for lung patients in Pavilion I. A Lower Austrian children's hospital was set up in Pavilion II with the support of the City of Gothenburg . In 1956, together with the Governor of Lower Austria, Johann Steinböck, the building complex was handed over to the Orthopedic Hospital in Gassergasse and the Order of the Servants of the Holy Spirit , whereupon part by part of the Orthopedic Hospital was relocated to the former orphanage. In 1999, the Vinzenz Group took over the management of the spiritual hospital.

church

The church was built as a light and simple historical building for an orphanage. The Rondo (tour), a spacious, circular, open and covered entrance in front of the main entrance, puts visitors in the mood on the way to the church. In 1993 the church was completely renovated. For the needs of a hospital, a closed connecting passage to the pavilions was built on the side.
