The Unter-St.-Veit branch church Transfiguration of Christ is a Roman Catholic church in Vienna's 13th district , Hietzing , Unter-St.-Veit , at Sankt-Veit-Gasse 48.

The old church

The old Expositurkirche (1867–1965)

The village of Unter-St.-Veit emerged at the beginning of the 19th century; there were individual houses in the agricultural area even earlier. As the landlord, Michael Schwinner had 100 plots staked out in 1803 in order to generate more income. The "Neudörfl" was soon called Unter-St.-Veit, the center of St. Veits became Ober-St.-Veit, where the Ober-St.-Veit parish church , which was also responsible for the new settlement, stood.

In 1843 a wooden frame with a bell was set up on the meadow land purchased by the Roman Catholic parish Unter St. Veit, which is now the church. This bell has the lower inscription “Donor of this bell Mr. Jacob Flebus kk national private. Hat manufacturer and house owner in Unter St. Veit ”and at the top“ I poured Barth. Kaffel kk court bell founder in Vienna 1843 ”. Today it is one of the three bells in the church.

After a fire in 1860, which destroyed 13 houses, a pledge was made to build a church. A church building committee of the "Association for the construction of the poor house and schoolhouse including the chapel in Unter St. Veit" acted as the client. The church was built by master builder Josef Kopf from Hietzing and consecrated by dean Emanuel Paletz from Hütteldorf on August 25, 1867 as a branch church of the Ober-St.-Veiter parish church. In 1869 the aforementioned association was dissolved without the project parts "poor house and school house" being realized, the church building became the property of the community. In 1870, Upper and Lower St. Veit were separated into two independent local parishes. The Lower Austrian Provincial Law of December 19, 1890 decided to incorporate suburbs into the city of Vienna, which came into force on January 1, 1892. De facto, Unter-St.-Veit was taken over by the Viennese city administration on July 6, 1891, including the church that was owned by Unter-St.-Veit.

In 1907, Kaplan Gotthard Blümel was able to purchase the baroque high altar of the abandoned Laimgrubenkirche for the church, which remained in use until 1965. In 1935, Blümel was able to avert Cardinal Theodor Innitzer's proposal to demolish the church and rebuild it. In 1940 the church was elevated to an expositur. After Gotthard Blümel's death, the church was demolished in 1965. Three terracotta statues, Immaculate, Christ and Francis, were recovered by Felix Steinwandtner, who ran his butcher's shop to the left of the church, and later placed in the covered entrance to the new church. The "Laimgrubenaltar" was recovered in a depot of the Federal Monuments Office.

The new church

In the years 1965 to 1967 the church was rebuilt much larger according to the plans of the architect Anton Steflicek , consecrated on July 9, 1967 by Archbishop-Coadjutor Franz Jachym and elevated to a parish church by Cardinal Franz König on January 1, 1968 . The church was set back from the alley, so that a small forecourt emerged in front of the narrow side of the nave facing the alley, on the left edge of which the high tower facing the alley stands. The gable facade is made of exposed concrete and is structured with round windows and rectangular portal. In the church, the monumental fresco Transfiguration of Christ by Sepp Mayrhuber is attached to the altar wall . The organ was built in 1969 by the instrument manufacturer Novak .

A figure of St. John Nepomuk from 1855 stands in front of the church.

Opposite the church, which is embedded in the front of the houses facing the city center, Wittegasse, where the rectory is at No. 4, branches off from St.-Veit-Gasse.
