Novak accordions
The company Novak Harmonikas , actually Rudolf Novak Musikinstrumentproduktion GmbH , is an instrument manufacturing company in Klagenfurt , Carinthia .
Company history
The company was founded in Klagenfurt in 1874 by Josef Novak . Josef Novak was a watchmaker and started building accordions and building Josef Novak accordions .
Rupert, son of Josef Novak, continued the business until 1926. He was followed by Rudolf Novak. In 1955 he took over the organ building company Gebrüder Mauracher in Linz . Rudolf was followed by his son of the same name; he managed the company from 1973 to 1995. Now the company has been converted into a GmbH , Arno Sussitz took over the management. The company currently employs 17 people in harmonica construction. Up to 500 instruments are manufactured annually.
Instruments
In 1874, when the company was founded, the company produced the Vienna model . It was not until a number of years later that mainly Styrian harmonicas were made, initially the three-row model. Rupert Novak was already building five-row Styrian harmonicas around 1900 .
A picture on a company brochure shows Rupert Novak with a five-row instrument, which does not correspond to the picture presented here. The illustration to the side shows an instrument that is closer to older Viennese models. The instrument shown on the company brochure is similar to models from Hlavacek. The bellows had rounded metal corners as in Josef Hlaváček's , it was locked with hooks on the housing parts. Otherwise, the models already had all the features of today's traditional models, such as:
- Graduated wooden mechanics on the treble, consisting of two parts mounted on top of each other
- Keys without offset
- Metal hood and metal decorative bands on the bellows
- Metal decoration around the bass keys with dragon head decoration
- Metal horns on the bass part
- The company sign had no angels as decoration
- Inlays on both case parts
Organ building
Rudolf Novak the Elder took over the organ building company Gebrüder Mauracher in 1955 and then built organs.

Rudolf Novak the Younger managed the company from 1973 to 1995.
