Parish Church Probstdorf
The parish church of Probstdorf is in the cadastral community of Probstdorf in the municipality of Groß-Enzersdorf in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Stephanus belongs to the deanery Marchfeld in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg in the archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).
The church building, which can be seen from afar, stands at the northern end of the Angereine originally single-line street perimeter village of Probstdorf. It has a medieval core and was formerly surrounded by a cemetery. The parish was founded by the Hochstift Freising around 1050 .
External church building
The tall, Romanesque nave from the 12th century was redesigned in Baroque style in the second half of the 17th century. It has a steep gable roof. The choir and the sacristy are marked 1418. The west facade is a four-story tower from 1802 with a simple stone portal. The tower has round-arched sound windows and a pointed helmet above a continuous cornice. In 1952 the Romanesque quarry stone masonry with opus spicatum , a stone frieze and a Romanesque portal was uncovered on the north wall of the nave . The portal in the south is Gothic, the arched windows are baroque. The Gothic choir has two-lane tracery windows between strong buttresses with water hammer. A Gothic sacristy is built in the north. In the north and south there are baroque chapel extensions with lunette windows from the 2nd half of the 17th century. There is a tombstone for Pastor Marcus Anton Wittola with 1797.
Inner church building
The three-bay nave has a barn with stab cap with a surrounding balustrade frieze. In the eastern yoke is a transept-like extension with square, baroque chapels with groined vaults over a corner pilaster structure. The three-part, cross-arched organ loft stands on two Tuscan columns. The equally wide, two-bay choir with a five-eighth end has a ribbed vault on consoles and service bundles with the Lamb of God on the eastern keystone. In the south wall of the choir is a Gothic niche for sessions . To the north of the choir is the sacristy, which is essentially Gothic, with a stitch cap vault and an oratory above.
Furnishing
The high altar from the 2nd half of the 18th century is a strict double columned altar with a slightly retracted center. On it stands a crucifix from the same period, to the side the half-length figures of Saints Peter and Paul, in the excerpt the eye of God . The tabernacle is flanked by putti. A remarkable pulpit from 1700 is in custody. A baroque stone pietà is from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. A former altarpiece St. Johannes Nepomuk painted Johann Michael Rottmayr at the beginning of the 18th century . The Gothic font is from the 14th century. There is a marble epitaph of the Thavonat family dating from 1747.
The organ was built by Rudolf Novak in 1965 .
Rectory
The two-storey building north of the parish church was built at the end of the 18th century.
The pastor is the former vicar general of the Archdiocese of Vienna and co-founder of the pastors' initiative Helmut Schüller .
