Helmut Schüller (born December 24, 1952 in Vienna ) is an Austrian clergyman in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Helmut Schüller was born in 1952. He is the older brother of ORF journalist and Turkey correspondent Christian Schüller . Schüller attended the Hollabrunn boys' seminar from 1963 to 1971 , where he was taught by Hans Hermann Groër , among others . After graduating from high school , he studied theology at the Universities of Vienna and Freiburg im Breisgau and completed his studies with a doctorate. After his ordination he worked from 1977 as a chaplain in the parish of St. Brigitta and as a religion teacher at a secondary school and at a technical college (at the Technological Trade Museum ). In 1981 he became a diocesan youth pastor in Vienna. From 1986 to 1995 he worked for Caritas. On December 1, 1988, he took over from Leopold Ungar as director of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna and on May 16, 1991 that of President of Caritas Austria . He was named WU Manager of the Year 1993 for the “excellent management of the Caritas corporation” . In December 1993 he was a target of the first letter bomb series by Franz Fuchs ; the bomb was discovered in time.

After the appointment of Christoph Cardinal Schönborn to the office of Archbishop of Vienna , this student appointed Vicar General in September 1995 , but dismissed him from this office again in February 1999 because of “profound differences of opinion”.

In 1996 Schüller became head of the Ombudsman's Office of the Archdiocese of Vienna for victims of sexual abuse in the church. During this time he formulated rules for church workers in dealing with sexual abuse; they were not implemented in all dioceses in Austria. In 2005, Schüller gave this position back because his aim was for the ombudsman to be run by laypeople. According to his own statement, these years were a disillusionment for him with regard to the reality in everyday church life.

Helmut Schüller is pastor of the parish church of St. Stephan in the town of Probstdorf im Marchfeld in the municipality of Groß-Enzersdorf , university chaplain of the Catholic University Community of Vienna, spiritual assistant to the Catholic University Youth Vienna, student chaplain and, since autumn 2006, spiritual assistant to the Catholic Academic Association of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

On April 25, 2006, together with Father Udo Fischer OSB , Schüller presented the pastors' initiative to the public, which, among other things, opposed a “dubious development of parish amalgamations” and supported the “vocation of all baptized to shared responsibility, codecision and participation” in the church would like to. The admission of so-called viri probati to priestly ordination was also proposed. On June 19, 2011, the “Call to Disobedience” was published, which among other things calls for the admission of women and married people to the priesthood.

In November 2012, Helmut Schüller's papal honorary title of Monsignor was revoked by the Holy See . A reason for this was not given.

Schüller is a member of the K.Ö.L. Maximiliana Vienna in the Academic Association of Catholic-Austrian Landsmannschaften . In May 2007 Helmut Schüller was elected Chairman of the Board of the Fairtrade Austria Association.
