Herbert Kohlmaier

Herbert Kohlmaier (born December 29, 1934 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ).

Live and act

Herbert Kohlmaier graduated from Laa an der Thaya in 1952. When Dr. juris (1957) he worked as a social law expert in the Chamber of Labor and Social Insurance. From 1969 to 1988 he was a member of the National Council , from 1971 to 1975 General Secretary of the ÖVP, from 1978 to 1987 Federal Chairman of the ÖAAB , the ÖVP workers' organization, and from 1988 to 1995 Ombudsman of the Republic of Austria. He volunteered to lead several organizations such as the Austrian Family Federation, the Austrian-Italian Society, the Disabled Sports Association and the Association for Media Culture. Together with like-minded people, including the ÖVP politicians Erhard Busek and Andreas Khol , he founded the reform movement “Laity Initiative” in the Catholic Church in 1998. He headed this initiative, which is supported by more than 13,000 people, from 2009 to 2011 and - after a break of several years - again until 2016. She calls for a contemporary church with active participation of the church people, furthermore the abolition of compulsory celibacy and the ordination of women initially as deacons .

In 1957 he married Edith Libanitz. He has four children with her and they have seven grandchildren together.

Since 1978 he has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Rudolfina Vienna in the ÖCV .
