Guillermo Luis Franco Farcuason (born November 3, 1976 in Corrientes , Argentina ) is a retired Mexican- Argentine football player .
Career
Guille Franco was born and raised in Argentina and his football career began with one of the "big five", in the youth of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro from Buenos Aires . In May 1996 the striker made his first appearance in the Primera División there. Nevertheless, it took several years before he achieved the breakthrough. Only in the 1999/2000 season he became a regular player and he was successful with 10 goals. The following year he won the Apertura (championship title in the first half of the season) with San Lorenzo and then the Copa Mercosur . In 2002 he left Argentina during the economic crisis and came to the Mexican first division club CF Monterrey .
Monterrey, which had not stood in a championship final for ten years, won the Clausura in 2003 . Franco played a big part in this with his 10 goals this season and was voted the best player in the league. In the subsequent Apertura he was top scorer with 15 goals and the club was runner-up. After that, an injury threw him back a little before returning at the 2005 runner-up.
In the meantime, Guillermo Franco had acquired Mexican citizenship in addition to his Argentine citizenship because the national coach had asked him if he would like to play for the Tri , the Mexican national soccer team . He made his international debut in the Mexican colors in a friendly on October 8, 2005 against Guatemala, which was won 5-2 and to which he contributed one goal.
At the beginning of 2006, Franco moved to Spain. The striker went to Villarreal as a reinforcement . There he was also used in the Champions League , where the club made it to the semi-finals. Franco had a contract until 2009.
In April 2006 he was included in Mexico's squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and was in the starting XI of the North Americans.
After not receiving a new contract with Villarreal CF, he moved to West Ham United . He signed a one-year contract with the Londoners. During his time with the Hammers he prepared the winning goal for Scott Parker against Wigan Athletic , which brought West Ham out of the danger of relegation. In May, the club announced that it did not want to extend the contract with Franco any further.
At the 2010 World Cup , he was part of the Mexican squad. He made four appearances during the tournament. After Mexico was eliminated in the round of 16 against Argentina, he announced his resignation from the national team.
Franco was without a club for a few months before joining CA Vélez Sársfield in early 2011 . He came on a few short appearances in the Clausura 2011 and won the championship with his club. At the beginning of 2012 he moved to CF Pachuca in Mexico. After eleven missions, he left the club after half a year. In September 2012, Chicago Fire signed Franco. Here he came on three short assignments. After his contract was not renewed, he ended his career.
