The State Farm Stadium is a stadium with closable roof and retractable lawn in the US city of Glendale , 15  km west of the metropolis of Phoenix in the state of Arizona located. It is designed as a multi-purpose stadium in which, among other things, American football , basketball , soccer , motor sports , rodeos , concerts , trade fairs , exhibitions or business events can take place. The Gila River Arena , home to the Arizona Coyotes NHL team , is just a few hundred yards north of State Farm Stadium.

history

After construction began on April 12, 2003, the modern arena was inaugurated on August 1, 2006 under the name Cardinals Stadium . The State Farm Stadium is the home stadium of the NFL teams the Arizona Cardinals . In the first home game of the 2006 NFL season , the Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers with 34:27. The arena has a closable roof and a mobile playing field with natural grass . Among the 63,400 seats (expandable to 78,600 seats) of the stadium include 88 VIP - boxes ( lofts , called) including three party lofts and about 7,400 club seats. 14,000 parking spaces are available around the arena. The exterior facade is modeled on a barrel cactus that is widespread in Grand Canyon State .

On September 26, 2006, the University of Phoenix became the stadium's name sponsor . For the contract over 20 years, the university paid 154.5 million dollars . However, the university does not have college sports teams as it specializes in higher education for working adults. In April 2017 it was announced that the University of Phoenix would like to withdraw from the contractual relationship. On September 4, 2018, the name was announced to be State Farm Stadium. The contract with the insurance company State Farm has a term of 18 years.

Events

Super bowl

On February 3, 2008, the Super Bowl XLII between the New York Giants and New England Patriots took place in this stadium. The game ended 17:14 for the New York Giants.

On February 1, 2015, the stadium was again the site of a Super Bowl . The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots met in Super Bowl XLIX . The game ended 28:24 for the New England Patriots, who won the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the fourth time.

The stadium is slated to host the Super Bowl LVII in 2023 .

Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl , the All-Star Game of the NFL , was the first time on 25 January 2015 instead of at the stadium in Glendale. Team Irvin won against Team Carter 32:28.

Fiesta Bowl

The Fiesta Bowl is part of the Bowl Championship Series and has been played at the University of Phoenix Stadium since 2007. The modern arena replaced the previous Sun Devil Stadium , which was the venue from 1971 to 2006. The NCAA game takes place around the turn of the year. The sponsor name has been PlayStation Fiesta Bowl since December 2016 .

WrestleMania

In 2010 the University of Phoenix Stadium hosted WrestleMania XXVI, World Wrestling Entertainment's largest event , with 72,219 spectators filling the stadium.

Soccer

On February 7, 2007, the teams of the USA and Mexico met in an international soccer match , which the hosts won 2-0. The game took place in front of a sold out house (63,400 visitors). It was the most popular soccer game in the state of Arizona at the time. The "US Boys" won 1-0 against Venezuela on January 21, 2012. Another game of the Mexicans took place on January 30, 2013 against Denmark (1: 1).

In July 2015 the stadium was one of thirteen venues for the CONCACAF Gold Cup . Two years later, the sports facility was the venue for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 .

Concerts

In addition to the sporting events, the Cardinals venue is the venue for concerts .
