The Stanford Stadium is a college football - stadium on the campus of Stanford University in the US city of Stanford , about 36  Miles (about 58  km ) south of San Francisco , in the state of California . Opened in 1921, it primarily serves as the venue for the Stanford Cardinal football games played in the NCAA's Pac-12 .

history

The stadium was built in just four months in a race with the University of California at Berkeley in 1921 and opened on November 19, 1921. The first game was against Berkeley, who defeated Stanford 42-7. The then horseshoe-shaped stadium had an athletics facility until the renovation in 2005 and an original spectator capacity of 60,000. It was the second largest stadium of the time after the Yale Bowl . In 1925 another 10,200 seats were added, almost closing the horseshoe shape. Finally, in 1927, the number of rows of seats was increased by a further 14 to a total of 80 rows and the maximum capacity of 85,500 was reached. In 1935 the derby against Berkeley, which Stanford won 13-0, set an attendance record of 94,000.

On October 22, 1989, the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) played a home game at Stanford Stadium, as Candlestick Park had suffered damage from the Loma Prieta earthquake five days earlier . In 1994, six World Cup matches were played here. Brazil had three wins on the way to the world title at Stanford Stadium. In 2005 the facility was renovated following the season. The renovated venue was opened on September 16, 2006 with a game against the Navy Midshipmen , which was lost 9:37.
