The Yale Bowl is a football - stadium in New Haven , Connecticut , which on the border with West Haven about 2 kilometers west of the main campus of Yale University , is located. It was opened in 1914 and today has a seating capacity of 64,269. Originally it was 70,869, but has been reduced several times through renovations. The stadium is primarily used as the home of the NCAA Yale Bulldogs who play in the Ivy League . Between 1973 and 1974, when Yankee Stadium was being renovated and Giants Stadium was under construction, the New York Giants also played at the Yale Bowl.
history
Construction of the stadium was in August 1913. First, the pitch was dug and then with the excavated soil a berm piled within to an elliptical dish ( Engl. Bowl ) to get. It was the first bowl- shaped stadium in the United States and inspired the design of several such stadiums, such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum , Rose Bowl Stadium, and Michigan Stadium . On February 27, 1987, the stadium was declared a National Historic Landmark .
