The Giants Stadium was until 2010 the home of the NFL teams New York Giants and New York Jets as well as the New York Red Bulls football club from Major League Soccer . From 1977 to 1984 Cosmos New York also played there .

The Giants Stadium was in East Rutherford in the US state of New Jersey , in the Meadowlands Sports Complex , along with the Meadowlands Racetrack and the Izod Center .

The stadium had 80,242 spectator seats and was the second largest stadium in the NFL behind FedExField the Washington Redskins . Among other things, it hosted the 1994 World Cup in the United States and the opening game of the 1999 Women's World Cup .

For the 2010 season, the two NFL teams moved to the adjacent Meadowlands Stadium . The modern designed stadium offers 82,500 seats, around 2,000 more than the Giants Stadium. The New York Red Bulls also moved in 2010, they play in the newly built Red Bull Arena . The stadium was demolished in May and June 2010, the vacated area is now used as a parking lot for the newly built Meadowlands Stadium.

Other Events

The stadium was one of the locations for the worldwide benefit concert Live Earth on July 7, 2007. With 24 appearances, Bruce Springsteen is the artist with the most concerts at Giants Stadium. On October 9, 2009, he also played the last concert held at Giants Stadium with the E-Street Band . For the occasion, Springsteen wrote the piece Wrecking Ball .

On October 5, 1995, Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass in the stadium in front of 82,948 visitors.
