history
The Barley Pavilion opened in 1981 and forms the core of the Loyola Marymount University sports complex . It was named after Albert Gersten after the Gersten family was the largest single donor to the project. The university teams play in it, so that a tradition in college basketball and volleyball has emerged. The hall was one of the sports facilities for the 1984 Summer Olympics . The weightlifting competitions were held there. In the run-up to the games, the Gymnastic Classics, sponsored by McDonald’s , took place in the Gersten Pavilion , in which the best gymnasts from the Soviet Union and the United States met.
The basketball teams Los Angeles Lakers , Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Sparks , among others, trained in the Barley Pavilion, the latter of which currently has its training center there.
The Gersten Pavilion covers a total of 63,000 square meters and, in addition to the playing area, also offers medical and training facilities. The architecture is functionally oriented and characterized by round columns at the corners of the building. In 2000 a video wall corresponding to the standards of the time was installed and in 2001 more energy-saving lighting was installed. Five years later the floor of the hall was completely renewed.
Hank Gathers
On March 4, 1990, Eric "Hank" Gathers, the 23-year-old star basketball player for the Loyola Marymount Lions , suffered circulatory collapse while playing a game and died of cardiomyopathy . In memory of Gathers, the hall is nicknamed Hank's House and his jersey number 44 is no longer in use. It hangs as a banner in the hall.
