The Pauley Pavilion (full name: Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Westwood district of the US city of Los Angeles . It is located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles . The hall is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams, women's and men's volleyball teams, and the women's gymnastics team. Many concerts and other political events, for example, took place in the hall. The building designed by Welton Becket opened in 1965. The hall was named after Edwin W. Pauley , who raised about a fifth of the five million US dollar construction costs.
history
The Pauley Pavilion was built as the venue for the university basketball team and opened in June 1965. It has a total of 12,829 spectators. The first team to take on the UCLA team at the Pauley Pavilion came from Ohio State University . Over time, the women's basketball team also appeared there. In 1981 the first volleyball game took place in the hall. During the 1984 Summer Olympics , gymnastics competitions were held in the Pauley Pavilion .
On October 13, 1988, the television duel between George HW Bush and Michael Dukakis took place in the hall ; in 1992 the MTV Video Music Awards were presented there. The Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards will also be presented in the Pauley Pavilion. A large number of musicians also performed in it, including Bob Marley , Bob Dylan , Frank Sinatra , Luciano Pavarotti , Eric Clapton and Frank Zappa . On February 3, 2008, Barack Obama's campaign event was held at the Pauley Pavilion just before the California primaries .
From 2010 to 2012, the venue was extensively renovated for 136 million US dollars . There will then be 13,002 seats available for visitors in the stands.
The hall was reopened on November 9, 2012 with great celebrations.
