‹  Super Bowl LII Super Bowl LIV  ›

The Super Bowl LIII was the 53th  Super Bowl , the final game of the season 2018 of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . The game between AFC Champion New England Patriots and NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams took place on February 3, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. local time (February 4, 0:30 a.m. CET ) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta , Georgia , carried out. It was the third Super Bowl to be held in Atlanta after Super Bowl XXVIII of 1994 and Super Bowl XXXIV of 2000.

The New England Patriots won the game 13: 3 and thus their sixth Super Bowl. The wide receiver Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots became the Super Bowl MVP elected. The game, in which for the first time in the history of the Super Bowl no touchdown was scored before the fourth quarter, replaced Super Bowl VII , which ended 14: 7, as the game with the lowest points in the Super Bowl.

venue

On May 19, 2015, the NFL announced the four finalists who would be eligible for Super Bowl LIII in 2019 or Super Bowl LIV in 2020. The NFL team owners selected the venue on May 24, 2016. The finalists, all in the southern United States , were:

With the Los Angeles Rams (champions of the NFC) and the New England Patriots (champions of the AFC), the teams that were ranked number 2 in the play-offs in their conferences after the regular season prevailed . The Los Angeles Rams had a record of 13: 3, the New England Patriots a record of 11: 5.

The Rams moved back into the Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl XXXVI 17 years earlier. The New England Patriots took part in the Super Bowl for the eleventh time and for the third time in a row, having lost last year's Super Bowl LII to the Philadelphia Eagles and won the Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons . It was the second time both teams had met in a Super Bowl. The first meeting, 18 years earlier at Super Bowl XXXVI, the Patriots won against the Rams, who were then still based in St. Louis, with 20:17. With this victory began the successful era of the Patriots of quarterback Tom Brady , who played his first Super Bowl as a replacement for the injured Drew Bledsoe and head coach Bill Belichick , who had taken over the position of head coach in 2000.

The Los Angeles Rams, coached by Sean McVay , the league's youngest head coach , ended the regular season with a score of 13: 3 behind the tied New Orleans Saints , against whom they had lost the direct comparison. They finished the previous season with 11: 5 in third place, in the Wild Card Round they were defeated by the Atlanta Falcons with 13:26 . The offense of the Rams was developed by Pro Bowl - quarterback Jared Goff stated that over the season a rating quarterback had 101.1. Other key Rams players included running back Todd Gurley , defensive tackle Aaron Donald , who scored in the most quarterback sacks of the season, and linebacker Cory Littleton , all of whom were also in the Pro Bowl. During the season, the offense was reinforced by new signing CJ Anderson , who successfully represented Gurley after an injury.

After the Rams had no play as the second-placed team in the Wild Card Round, they faced the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round , against whom they won 30:22. In particular, the two running backs Gurley and Anderson showed a good performance, while the performance of quarterback Goff was judged to be disappointing.

In the NFC Championship Game , the Rams had to compete with the New Orleans Saints, who had previously beaten last year's champion Philadelphia Eagles . The Rams' victory was overshadowed by a scandal. The Saints were ahead for the majority of the game, a serious wrong decision by the referee prevented the Saints from deciding the game early. Shortly before the end of the game, Drew Brees , quarterback for the Saints, threw a pass to wide receiver Tommylee Lewis at 20:20 with 1:49 remaining playing time in the third attempt . Cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman ran into Lewis and prevented the pass catch, which should have been punished as pass interference , instead the play was counted as an incomplete pass ( incomplete ). Due to the wrong decision, New Orleans was forced to shoot the field goal directly instead of being able to let time run down beforehand. Los Angeles was able to equalize with a field goal in the remaining time, so the game went into overtime. The Saints got the ball first, after an interception the Rams got possession. With a long 57-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein , the Rams eventually won the game in overtime. The NFL itself later stated that the referee's decision was a mistake, but this had no effect on the scoring of the game. Many observers described the wrong decision as "the worst mistake in NFL history".

The New England Patriots, who have been coached by successful coach Bill Belichick since 2000 , finished second in the AFC behind the Kansas City Chiefs . As the third team, by moving into Super Bowl LIII, they were able to take part in three Super Bowls in a row. Quarterback Tom Brady made it to the Super Bowl for the ninth time, more than any other NFL team. Besides Brady included wide receiver Julian Edelman , the Super Bowl MVP was tight end Rob Gronkowski and Pro Bowl - cornerback Stephon Gilmore , who played an important role with an interception against Goff in the Super Bowl, New England's best players.

In the Wild Card Round, the Patriots and the Rams had no play and met the Los Angeles Chargers in the Divisional Round , who they clearly defeated, after a half-time score of 35: 7 the game ended with a clear 41:28 win for New England.

In the AFC Championship Game , in which the Patriots participated for the eighth time in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs, the top-seeded team of the AFC , was waiting for New England. After the Patriots were clearly leading 14-0 after the first half, an open exchange of blows developed in the second half, in which Kansas City also briefly took the lead. With a score of 31:31, the game went into overtime, in which the Patriots received the ball first. In the first series of attacks they scored a touchdown, which New England won the game 37:31.

Play-offs

The play-offs began on January 5, 2019. The results of the regular season decided on the placement of the teams in the respective conference . The two teams with the best result from the regular season each had a bye week in the first round and home rights for the rest of the play-offs up to the Super Bowl . The teams in third and fourth position in their conference had home rights in the first play-off game, the Wild Card Round .

Game summary

1st half

The Patriots got the ball first. In its first Drive was after three successful runs , the first pass from Tom Brady of linebacker Cory Littleton intercepted ( interception ). In the following ball possession, the Rams were only able to gain two yards of space in three attempts and had to give up the right to attack again with a punt . The Patriots then came within field goal range, but kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the target from 46 yards away. After both sides continued to deliver little offensively and had to punt twice, the first quarter ended without points.

New England scored the first points of the game in the second quarter with a field goal that Stephen Gostkowski converted from 42 yards. Shortly before the end of the first half, the Patriots got the chance for another field goal. But they decided, since they only had to gain one yard of space for a new first down, to play the fourth attempt. However, they did not succeed in gaining the necessary space and lost possession of the ball through a turnover on downs . This ended the first half with 3-0, fewer points were only scored in the first half of Super Bowl IX (2-0). The Rams had the ball six times and had to punt six times, with Johnny Hekker , punter of the Rams, showing a strong performance with 267 yards of space.

2nd half

The second half continued without points. On his eighth mission, Hekker scored the longest punt in Super Bowl history with a 65 yard punt. Towards the end of the third quarter, the Rams scored their first points when Greg Zuerlein scored a field goal from 53 yards.

In the fourth quarter, the Patriots got into the red zone for the first time in the game after Brady gained more space with two successful passes to Rob Gronkowski . A 2-yard touchdown run by Sony Michel and a successful point after touchdown by Gostkowski gave New England a 10-3 lead. Then the Rams managed a long attack, which, however, was unsuccessful due to an interception from Stephon Gilmore . 72 seconds before the end of the game, Gostkowski raised a field goal to 13: 3, which meant that Los Angeles had to score at least two more times to win the game, but they couldn't.
