Career highlights and awards

Antonio "Tony" Ramiro Romo (* 21st April 1980 in San Diego , California ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL) from 2003 to 2016 .

college

Romo grew up in San Diego, his father was a member of the Navy and there with the American Navy. He was already playing football and basketball in high school . In 1999 Romo received a scholarship to Eastern Illinois University in Charleston , where he played quarterback for the Eastern Illinois Panthers of a team at the All-Ohio Valley Conference . In his sophomore year he was able to achieve 27 touchdowns and concluded his career with a school and league record of 85 thrown touchdowns. With his passports he was able to gain 8212 yards of space during his studies. In his conference he was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times in a row .

Career

Romo could not draw attention to himself in the week-long training camp before the NFL Draft 2003 and was not signed by any team. However, two teams already contacted him during the draft when it became apparent that he would not find an employer. Romo turned down the higher endowed offer of the Denver Broncos and signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys , where he was promoted in particular by assistant coach Sean Payton .

In recent years, after Troy Aikman's career ended due to injury, the Cowboys had used a total of eight starting quarterbacks , including well-known players such as Vinny Testaverde , Drew Bledsoe and Randall Cunningham , but also young players such as Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson . But none of the players could completely convince. The attacking game of the cowboys suffered due to the often only average performance of the quarterbacks, the leading football team of the 1990s slipped into mediocrity.

Romo was initially used as the third quarterback on the sidelines in 2003, as Dallas believed that they could build on old successes with experienced players such as Testaverde or Bledsoe. In 2006 Payton moved as head coach to the New Orleans Saints and tried to get clearance for Romo, which was rejected by the owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones . In the 6th game Romo had taken over the position of starting quarterback from Drew Bledsoe. In the further course of the season Romo made 19 touchdown passes and a space gain of 2,903 yards. The move into the play-offs in 2006 succeeded, but there they failed in the first round at the Seattle Seahawks with 21:20, because Tony Romo could not control the football at the snap to the winning field goal shortly before the end of the game .

Tony Romo in the 2009 season against the Kansas City Chiefs

In the regular season of the 2007 season he threw passes for 4,211 yards, and his 36 touchdowns were only exceeded by the new NFL record by Tom Brady, 50. Romo set several club records in 2007, such as: B. for most passing yards, touchdowns, and full passes, and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the second time . Under Romo's leadership, the Cowboys reached the play-offs as the best team in the NFC (13: 3 balance). However, they lost against arch rivals New York Giants 21:17. The Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo tied during the season with a six-year contract worth 67.5 million US dollars in the long term to the team. In 2009 he and his team again made it to the play-offs.

In March 2013, the Cowboys extended Romo's contract by six years, which made him the most expensive player the Cowboys had ever had.

In the further course of his career Romo had to struggle with injuries again and again. At the end of 2013 he underwent a back operation before he led the Cowboys into the play-offs in 2014 and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time this season. On the second day of the 2015 season, he broke his collarbone in a tackle , after which he paused for eight weeks. In the second game after his recovery, he fell again on the still weakened shoulder, broke his bone again and had to end the season early. In the third game of the 2016 pre-season, Romo injured his back against the Seattle Seahawks, whereupon a vertebral fracture was diagnosed.

On April 4, 2017, Romo announced the end of his career.

Honors

Romo received the Walter Payton Award as a college player in 2002 . This award is given annually to the best attacking player in his college division. Romo played in the Pro Bowl four times .
