The Super Bowl III , then the AFL-NFL Championship Game , was the third edition of the final of the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL). On January 12, 1969, the Baltimore Colts and the New York Jets faced each other at Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami , Florida . The New York Jets won with a final score of 16: 7. New York quarterback Joe Namath was named Super Bowl MVP .
background
Since the NFL had a greater reputation than the AFL and the skills of the teams and the players within the National Football League was greater than that in the American Football League, the Colts were strongly favored. However, Jets quarterback Joe Namath predicted victory in the Super Bowl and also said four AFL quarterbacks, including himself and his reserve babe Parilli, would be better than Colts quarterback Earl Morrall .
Super Bowl III is the oldest all-video Super Bowl.
Course of the game
The first half was without points except for a touchdown by the Jets. In the third and last quarter, the Jets' kicker , Jim Turner , scored three field goals , which resulted in an intermediate result of 16: 0. With only three minutes remaining, the Colts scored a touchdown, so it was 16: 7.
