Gerald John "Gerry" Philbin (born July 31, 1941 in Pawtucket , Rhode Island ) is a former American American football player . He played as a defensive end with the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) and in the American Football League (AFL).

Player career

College career

Gerry Philbin attended high school in his hometown . After graduating from high school, he studied at the University at Buffalo , where he played American football as a defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bulls . Philbin was voted All American for his athletic achievements , but also received various awards for his academic achievements.

Professional career

Gerry Philbin was drafted 19th in the third round in 1964 by the New York Jets, who played in the AFL . At the same time, the Detroit Lions of the NFL showed an interest in a commitment and pulled him in the NFL Draft in the third round in 33 place. Philbin was used as the defensive end by Weeb Ewbank , the head coach of the Jets. In 1968, the Jets won eleven of 14 games in the regular season to later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Joe Namath and Don Maynard . In the AFL final that year they beat the Oakland Raiders 27:23 and qualified for the Super Bowl . There they met in Super Bowl III (then still called AFL-NFL Championship Game) on the Baltimore Colts supervised by Don Shula . With a 16: 7 win Philbin and his teammates could leave the field. Gerry Philbin joined the Philadelphia Eagles after the 1972 season . As a player for the New York Stars , who played in the World Football League (WFL), he ended his career after the 1974 season.

After the career

Philbin was a successful businessman after his career and among other things ran a recycling company on Long Island . He now lives in West Palm Beach , Florida .

Honors

Gerald Philbin played twice in the AFL All-Star game and was voted All Star of the AFL and the WFL four times . The New York Jets honor him at MetLife Stadium on the New York Jets Ring of Honor. Philbin is a member of the UB Athletics Hall of Fame and the TJB Hall of Fame. Sports Illustrated magazine named him one of the Best Rhode Island Athletes in 1999.
