George Edward "Butch" Byrd Jr. (* 20th September 1941 in Watervliet , New York ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as a cornerback in the American Football League (AFL) and in the National Football League (NFL) with the Buffalo Bills .

Player career

College career

Butch Byrd visited Troy the high school . At his school, the LaSalle Institute, he already played American football and was voted into the city selection several times. After graduating from high school, he studied at Boston University . For the Boston University Terriers , he played three years football as a running back , but also as a punt - and kick-off -Returner.

Professional career

George Byrd was drafted in the fourth round of the year by the Buffalo Bills in 25th place . Byrd was already used by Head Coach Lou Saban as a rookie in the defense of the Bills as a cornerback . This year Byrd celebrated his first big success with the Bills. The team, in whose ranks the top players Jack Kemp , Billy Shaw , Tom Sestak and Daryle Lamonica stood, had won twelve of 14 games in the regular season and thus moved into the AFL final , where they played on the team of the San Diego Chargers met. The Bills left the field with a 20: 7 win. Among other things, Byrd had contributed to the success of the Buffalo team with an interception .

Byrd failed his third place in the AFL final in 1966 with his team at the Kansas City Chiefs with 31: 7. This time he could not intervene decisively in the game of the Bills. George Byrd joined the Denver Broncos in 1971 and retired after a year of play. Byrd now lives in Weston , Massachusetts .

Honors

Butch Byrd played five times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro five times . Byrd is a member of the American Football League All-Time Team , the Boston University Athletics Hall of Fame , the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame, and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, and his high school hall of fame. The Buffalo Bills honor him on the Buffalo Bills 50th Anniversary Team as one of their all-time best players.
