William Lewis Shaw (* 15. December 1938 in Natchez , Mississippi ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as a guard in the American Football League (AFL) at the Buffalo Bills .

youth

Billy Shaw first visited in a small town near Vicksburg the high school . Until the school closed the game of the football team, Shaw played there as an end . The father of Shaw was a college football player of the University of Mississippi and moved the family then to Vicksburg, where Billy at the Carr Central High School as a defensive tackle and offensive tackle played for the school team. In his senior year at school, Shaw was voted All-American and nominated for Georgia Tech's All-Time Team .

Player career

College career

Billy Shaw studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1958 to 1960 . As a defensive tackle, he played for Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football. In 1960 he was able to move into the Gator Bowl with his team , where the team was defeated by the University of Arkansas 14: 7. In his senior year at school, Shaw was voted All-American and nominated for Georgia Tech's All-Time Team . For his athletic achievements, he was recognized by his college in all three years of study. In 1961, Billy Shaw received an appointment for the college all-star game. Initially, he was intended to replace the defensive tackle Bob Lilly . Otto Graham , who coached the college All-Star team, moved Shaw to the position of guard after Houston Antwine , who was scheduled for the position, injured himself. Shaw convinced in this position, although he could not prevent the defeat of the college All-Stars against the reigning NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles .

Professional career

Billy Shaw was selected in 1961 by the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL), who were coached by Tom Landry , in the 14th round in 184 place of the NFL Draft . At the same time, the Buffalo Bills trained by Buster Ramsey elected him in the second round in eleventh place in the AFL Draft. After Shaw announced that the Cowboys wanted to use him as a linebacker , but saw his future as a guard, he decided to sign a contract with the team from Buffalo . Ramsey used Shaw as a blocker for his own running backs , and he also had the task of protecting his own quarterback during passing plays .

In 1962 Lou Saban had taken over the coaching position at the Bills, he managed to form a top team from the team. In 1962 and 1963, the Bills managed to tie the two quarterbacks Jack Kemp and Daryle Lamonica to the team. In the 1964 season, Billy Shaw was able to win twelve of 14 games with the Bills in the regular season and they moved into the AFL final , where they met the San Diego Chargers . The Bills left the field with a 20-7 win.

After the regular season in 1965, Shaw was able to move into the AFL final with the Bills, where they met the Chargers again. This time the final ended with a 23-0 win for the Bills. Shaw failed his third place in the AFL final in 1966 with his team at the Kansas City Chiefs with 31: 7. Billy Shaw suffered a serious knee injury prior to the 1967 season, which meant that he could only play nine games that year. He ended his career after the 1969 season.

Honors

Billy Shaw played eight times in the AFL All-Star Game , the final game of the best players of the season. He has been elected to the All-AFL nine times and is a member of the AFL All-Time Team , Pro Football Hall of Fame , Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame , Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, and Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. The Buffalo Bills honor him on the Wall of Fame and no longer give his shirt number. Shaw is the only player who has spent his entire professional career in the AFL and has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

After the career

Shaw returned to Georgia after his career and worked in the construction industry with his own company. He retired in 2005. Shaw is married and has three daughters. He now lives in Toccoa , Georgia.
