The 1961 AFL season was the American Football League's second season . That season, the Los Angeles Chargers moved to San Diego . Thanks to a strong pass defense, which caught 49 interceptions and six more in the play-offs in the fourteen regular season games , they dominated the league and ended the regular season after the first eleven victorious games with twelve wins and two defeats, with them won their division. In the AFL Championship Game they met the Houston Oilers , who set several offensive records this season. This game, characterized by thirteen turnover , won the Oilers 10: 3.

This season there was also the controversial victory of the Boston Patriots against the Dallas Texans on November 3, 1961. In the final play from the 1-yard line, a Patriots fan ran onto the field and at 21:28 for the Patriots saved the pass from Texans quarterback Cotton Davidson .
