James Edward "Jim" Kelly (* 14. February 1960 in East Brady , Pennsylvania ) is a former American American football poker players the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL) and the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL ). He played in the position of quarterback and led the Bills into four consecutive Super Bowls . Kelly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Career

Kelly was on a promising career in college football at the University of Miami in the NFL Draft in 1983 by the Buffalo Bills selected as the 14th player. Since the quarterback wanted "no way" to play there, he preferred to accept a lucrative offer from the rival United States Football League (USFL) to join the Houston Gamblers . Kelly experienced two successful years there, in which he a. a. the Most Valuable Player ( Wertvollster player is selected). When the Gamblers went bankrupt in 1985, he joined the Bills rather reluctantly in 1986. But under head coach Marv Levy Kelly established himself in the NFL as one of the best starting quarterbacks . Kelly had multiple Pro Bowl players both in the offense , with running back Thurman Thomas , the wide receivers Andre Reed and James Lofton , as well as in the defense , with defensive end Bruce Smith and linebacker Cornelius Bennett and with Steve Tasker in the special teams around them. Kelly became part of the "K-Gun", a hurry-up offense that ran throughout the game . As the quarterback of what is probably the fastest offense in the league, Kelly was elected to the Pro Bowl five times and reached the Super Bowl four times in a row with the Bills ( XXV , XXVI , XXVII , XXVIII ), but could never win it. In 1996 he resigned at the age of 36. With 101 wins this season, he was only the ninth quarterback to win one hundred NFL games at the time. In 2001 the Bills honored him by withdrawing his # 12 jersey, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame a year later .

Private life

Kelly is married to his wife, Jill, and has two daughters and a son named Hunter. Hunter Kelly suffered from Krabbe's disease , was a nursing case his entire life, and died in 2005 at the age of eight. Kelly dedicated his Hall of Fame speech to his son and established the Hunters Hope Foundation, which is devoted to combating the disease. Since the end of his career, Kelly himself has suffered from severe neck and back problems, so that several vertebrae had to be fixed with metal plates. In 2013, Kelly contracted squamous cell carcinoma , which is why parts of his left upper jaw were removed and a prosthesis implanted. In March 2014 it was announced that Kelly's cancer had returned. In the fall of the same year, Kelly's doctors reported that his illness "could no longer be determined".
