Francis Chan (born August 31, 1967 in Hong Kong ) is an American evangelical pastor , church planter, author and speaker.

Life

Chan was born in Hong Kong, his mother died giving birth. His father then moved to San Francisco . When he was seven years old, his father remarried. His stepmother died in a car accident two years later. After a year, his father married again. When he was 12 years old, his father also died of cancer. Chan and his three siblings were raised by his stepmother Josephine. They received support from a younger sister of his father's and her husband, Marion and William Wong, and their parish.

In high school and college, Chan attended Christian youth groups that promoted his faith. Before he became a pastor, he worked for companies such as Taco Bell , Mic Pizza , Kirby Company , Ralphs Market , Broadway , Restaurant Acapulco and as a flooring installer. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Master's College and a Master of Divinity from Master's Seminary. He then briefly worked as a youth pastor. In 1994, he founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley , Ventura County , California with his wife Lisa and 30 people , and it grew rapidly. In 2000 the church had 1,600 members.

Chan is also the founder and president of Eternity Bible College . He has written several books, Crazy Love becoming a bestseller in 2009. In 2010 he started producing a DVD series. His book Erasing hell (German edition: Hell light ) can be seen as a Christian-conservative replica of Rob Bell's controversial work The Last Word has love .

In 2011, Chan retired from the Cornerstone Community Church pastor to plant and grow a new ward in downtown San Francisco. He also appears as a speaker at Christian events in the United States and at conferences around the world. Many of his sermons, speeches, appearances and short messages are available on the Internet and in particular on YouTube.

Chan is a vehement opponent of the affluent Gospel (English: prosperity gospel ). He does not receive a salary as a pastor and only lives on a small part of the income from his books. With the rest of the money - up to 90% - of his actual income, he and his wife support organizations that work for child protection, the liberation of sex slaves and for the support of the poor.
