The Brühnetal nature reserve with a size of 90.46  hectares is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park east of the Westphalian Medebach . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2003 with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is also part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht (DE-4717-401) and the FFH area forest reserve Glindfeld-Orketal (DE 4817-304).

Area description

In the protected part of the Brühnetal, there is an open grassland valley with only a few trees. The trees are mostly on Orke influx Brühne , which rises within the NSG. There are only a few fields in the NSG. The Brühnetal is one of the outstanding natural conservation areas in the Medebach Bay.

Habitats and species

In the NSG there are various plant communities on the grassland. These are u. a. to oat grass meadows, ryegrass - white clover -Weiden and Burnet -Silgenwiesen. There is a small area of wet grassland in the NSG. In the wet grassland there are the plant communities of marsh marigolds-meadows and forest rushes-swamps. Rare and endangered plant species have been identified, especially in wet grassland.

Orchids were also found in rare species, as were the red- backed birds and whinchat . The area is used by endangered species as a resting and feeding place.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. The main reason given for protection is its importance as an outstanding refuge and networking habitat. The NSG is also intended to sustainably secure habitats that are particularly worthy of protection in accordance with Section 62 of the Landscape Act of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Natura 2000 network.

Protective measures

In the winter of 2013/2014, the Hochsauerlandkreis Biological Station removed the trees, mainly red alders , from a sub-area in the NSG part of Hooren, on a former rubble and landfill site .
