The Orketal nature reserve with a size of 197.92  hectares is located in the urban area of Medebach . It was expelled in 1999 by the Arnsberg district government . In 2003 it was again designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis with the Medebach landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht (DE-4717-401). The NSG also belongs to the FFH area of ​​the Glindfeld-Orketal forest reserve . The NSG goes from the city limits of Medebach to Winterberg to the city limits to Lichtenfels . The nature reserve Orketal divides the directly adjoining nature reserve Glindfeld (Medebach) in the western urban area of ​​Medebach into two parts. The village of Medelon divides the NSG into two parts.

Area description

The NSG is the Orke River . The grassland areas of the floodplain also belong to the NSG . Species such as kingfisher and gray wagtail breed in the area .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the stream and the floodplain with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
